Research Interests: taxonomy, diversity, systematics, and evolution of flowering plants. Specific research includes the systematics of the genera Cercocarpus and Purshia, and studies examining the evolution and diversification of the actinorhizal symbiosis, a nitrogen-fixing mutualism involving the roots of a small group of plants and the soil bacteria Frankia .
