Extra-Curricular Activities
The
department sponsors the local chapter of the Society of Physics
Students (SPS) in association with the American Institute of
Physics. The society, in turn, has sponsored outside speakers,
film series, and field trips to such regional laboratories as
Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, Sandia Labs, and the
Los Alamos facility in New Mexico.
Students are encouraged to attend the
two regional meetings of the American Association of Physics
Teachers with the physics faculty and to give presentation on
their own senior research project. Outstanding students may be
inducted into the national honorary physics society, Sigma Pi
Sigma.
We also have social functions throughout
the semester, hosted by SPS members and faculty members.
Special
Academic Opportunties
Unlike
larger departments, our department is so flexible and accessible
that students seeking help can just to come in and talk. Faculty
members maintain office hours throughout each day and always
make time to assist their students. The Physics Program provides
practical experience in physics through the university's work-study
program, tutoring, and participation in the lab practicum program.
All majors complete an undergraduate
research project supervised by one of the faculty. The results
of this research project are presented in a senior thesis and
at a physics seminar. Opportunities exist for research groups.
In addition, several students have obtained internships at national
laboratories such as Oak Ridge and Argonne, for work on a variety
of research projects.
Scholarships
Physics
students may apply for a number of general scholarships which
are available to CSU-Pueblo students in any major area of study.
President's scholarships are available to entering freshmen,
continuing students and transfer students. The LaMotte Scholarship
Fund provides scholarship money specifically to physics majors.
The new Sallie Watkins Scholarship fund for physics majors will
be available soon.
